NBA PreSeason Basketball: Indiana Pacers vs Memphis Grizzlies

The 2012-13  NBA season is about to get underway. This past Friday evening, I covered the Indiana Pacers take on the Memphis Grizzlies. Indianapolis Colts fans were celebrating as kicker Adam Vinateri’s 37 yard field goal just made it inside the uprights. The Colts regained the lead 17-16 with 1:01 left to play in the game. After photographing the kick and celebration, I grabbed my gear and headed toward the other end zone, thinking to myself, if there [...]

There are several things I love about Autumn in Indiana. The first, is the weather, the temperatures drop and along with that, the humidity drops, I love the crisp Autumn weather. NBA PreSeason Basketball: Indiana Pacers vs Memphis Grizzlies

The 2012-13  NBA season is about to get underway. This past Friday evening, I covered the Indiana Pacers take on the Memphis Grizzlies. Preseason NBA basketball is about the same as preseason NFL football, not all the starters play and if they do, it’s for a short time. It’s also the time when teams are trying out rookies and free agents to see who will make the final roster.

The Pacers have a pretty solid team coming back from last year, which doesn’t leave much room on the roster for rookies and free agents. There are a couple of new players that could have an impact on the Indiana roster. D.J. Augustin and Gerald Green both come to Indiana with 4 years of pro experience each and both add depth to the guard and small forward position.

I’m very excited to be shooting basketball again this season and with the NBA and NCAA, I have plenty of teams to cover again this year.  Take a look at some images below from the game and the slideshow at the end of this post has even more images.

Indianapolis Colts beat Cleveland Browns 17-13

I mentioned in my last post about the Indiana Fever winning the WNBA championship that I started the day off by shooting the Indianapolis Colts game. Lucas Oil Stadium is one of the newest stadiums in the NFL and I have a love/hate relationship with shooting games there. I don’t hate anything about the stadium or shooting the games there, my love/hate has to do with the light.

Let me explain. Lucas Oil Stadium has a retractable roof, that’s actually really cool. The stadium also has a huge window on the south side that can be opened and closed. So, on a nice sunny day, the roof and window will be open giving you the impression that you are in an open air stadium. However, because the open roof is only in the center part of the roof, depending on the time of day, the field is split in half with sun and shade. One side of the stadium will have gorgeous light and the other, is dark and shadowy. Hence, the love/hate relationship with shooting games there.

Shooting on the sunny end of the field can give you the opportunity to produce images such as the ones below of Cleveland WR Greg Little jumping to catch a pass, Colts RB Delone Carter running the ball and Browns QB Brandon Weedon under center.  These images would  be an example of why I love shooting games in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Shooting from the North side of the stadium in the shade is a little more challenging. You can produce great images but, you have to constantly adjust your aperture and ISO. Some shooters use automatic ISO or aperture priority on that side of the field. I shoot manual but, you have to adjust quickly as the players move across the field. The images are good but don’t have that great light in them, they look like an overcast day on an open field, here are a couple examples below.

The saving grace is, with the NFL season just about half way over, the cold weather will keep the roof closed and I won’t have anything to worry about while shooting at Lucas Oil Stadium. Who am I kidding, I’m a photographer, I’ll find something to worry about. :-)

Indiana Fever win their first WNBA Championship

This past Sunday, I started the day by photographing the Colts and Browns at Lucas Oil Stadium and ended it at Bankers Life Fieldhouse shooting the Indiana Fever as they won their first WNBA Championship. It was a very exciting day, to say the least. It was game 4 of the series and the Fever had a chance to close out the series and win their first WNBA Championship.

The game started off with the Fever jumping out to a seven point lead in the first four minutes of the game. The crowd was incredibly loud, the energy was intense and the players were playing each possession as it was the last. The Fever lead 25-18 at the end of the first quarter and looked to have control of the game. The crowd was definitely anticipating a game 4 win and a WNBA championship.

At the start of the second quarter, enter the officials. I don’t like to say anything bad about officiating, it is a very hard job and one of the two teams always thinks the officials made a bad call. After 3 fouls called on the Fever on 3 straight possessions, the crowd and Fever head coach Lin Dunn, thought the officials were in favor of Minnesota winning the game.

Minnesota was able to take advantage of the second quarter swing and tie the game at 38-38 and go into the locker room at half-time down five points, 47-42. The third quarter was back and forth, much like any good basketball game, featuring the two top teams. The Lynx were able to tie the game at 56-56 in the third quarter and make the fans a little nervous.

That was as close as it would get, the Fever would jump to a five point lead in the fourth quarter and not look back. They closed out the game and won their first WNBA championship. The team celebrated on the floor, giving all the photographers a good chance to get celebration and jube photos. After the celebration, the WNBA setup a small stage and the team posed was awarded the championship trophy. They posed with the trophy and spoke to the crowd for a while, giving us more opportunity for some images.

I had a great time covering the WNBA finals and congratulations to the Indiana Fever! Check out my gallery of images from the game and celebration in the slideshow below.
